EHX Big Muff Pi
The Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi is the most widely used fuzz pedal in shoegaze, delivering thick, sustaining distortion with a scooped midrange that allows vocals and other instruments to occupy the center of a mix. Its simple three-knob layout of volume, tone, and sustain belies the range of sounds available, from woolly low-gain fuzz to wall-of-sound saturation. J Mascis has used a Big Muff as the foundation of his tone for decades, and the pedal appears on countless shoegaze and noise rock recordings. Various versions including the Russian, Green, and Op-Amp editions each offer slightly different voicings. At its price point, the Big Muff remains one of the most accessible entry points into high-gain shoegaze guitar tone.
