Nirvana formed in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987, with Kurt Cobain building a guitar sound from deliberately cheap, damaged, and unconventional equipment that became the sonic blueprint for grunge. His prized guitar was a 1965 Fender Jaguar modified with a DiMarzio Super Distortion bridge pickup and PAF neck, while a 1969 Lake Placid Blue Fender Mustang Competition model featured throughout the Nevermind sessions. Cobain's pedal setup was famously minimal — a Boss DS-1 Distortion he described as 'the main factor' in his tone, an Electro-Harmonix Small Clone chorus responsible for the signature shimmer on Smells Like Teen Spirit and Come As You Are, and an EHX Big Muff Pi for the darker, heavier sound heard on Lithium. His live rig centered on a Mesa/Boogie Studio Preamp run into Marshall 4x12 cabinets, while the Nevermind sessions saw producer Butch Vig capture guitars through a Fender Bassman and Vox AC30. The deliberate simplicity of Cobain's setup — a few pedals, modded budget guitars, and whatever amp was available — rejected the gear-obsessed culture of 1980s rock and proved that tone was more about intention than investment.
