Medicine formed in Los Angeles in 1990, becoming one of the few American bands to engage directly with the British shoegaze sound while adding a distinctly Californian edge. Guitarist Brad Laner built walls of guitar noise that were harsher and more confrontational than most UK peers, while vocalist Beth Thompson provided a cool, detached counterpoint. Their 1992 debut Shot Forth Self Living was a dense, abrasive record that earned critical praise and a deal with American Recordings. The follow-up The Buried Life refined their approach with more structured songwriting without sacrificing the sonic overload. Laner's background in experimental music gave Medicine a compositional rigor beneath the apparent chaos. The band dissolved in the mid-1990s but reunited periodically, releasing To the Happy Few in 2013. Their work demonstrated that shoegaze could thrive outside its British origins and incorporate noise rock influences without losing melodic intent.
