Whirr

Whirr formed in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2010, quickly establishing themselves as one of the most prolific acts in the shoegaze revival. The band's sound drew heavily from early 1990s touchstones, particularly the dense guitar layers and buried vocals of My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive, filtered through a lo-fi aesthetic. Their 2014 album Sway is considered a high point of the revival era, balancing crushing distortion with an undeniable pop sensibility. Guitarist and vocalist Nick Bassett drove the project through various lineup changes, maintaining a consistent vision across multiple EPs and full-lengths released in rapid succession. The band's prolific output included splits and collaborations with other revival acts, helping to solidify a network of contemporary shoegaze bands centered on the American West Coast. Whirr's recordings favored saturation and haze, creating a sound that felt simultaneously massive and intimate.
