Neutral Milk Hotel was the primary vehicle of Jeff Mangum, based in Athens, Georgia, active in the 1990s. The band's 1998 album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea became one of indie rock's most celebrated records despite minimal commercial promotion. Mangum's guitar approach favored acoustic strumming and heavily distorted electric passages, with the latter employing fuzz pedals pushed to their limits to create a buzzing, lo-fi saturation. Robert Schneider's production embraced distortion as a textural tool across the entire mix, running vocals, horns, and guitars through overdriven preamps. The band's arrangements incorporated singing saw, brass, and accordion alongside conventional rock instrumentation, creating a dense, carnival-like atmosphere. Mangum's abrupt withdrawal from public life after the album's release contributed to its cult status. The band reunited for touring between 2013 and 2015 but recorded no new material.
