Gibson SG

The Gibson SG is a double-cutaway solidbody guitar with dual humbuckers, known for its lightweight mahogany body, fast slim-taper neck, and aggressive midrange tone. Its humbucking pickups produce a thick, warm output that drives amplifiers and effects pedals harder than single-coil alternatives, making it a natural fit for heavier post-punk and gothic rock styles. The SG's upper-fret access and slim profile encourage lead playing, while its sustain and resonance reward players who let notes ring into feedback. Bernard Sumner used an SG throughout Joy Division's catalog, and Daniel Ash made it central to Bauhaus' angular gothic sound. The guitar's relatively affordable price point compared to Les Pauls made it a practical choice for working post-punk musicians throughout the late 1970s and 1980s.
