Grouper is the solo project of Liz Harris, based in Portland, Oregon, active since 2005. Harris builds fragile, intimate compositions from layered vocals, sparse piano, and heavily processed guitar recorded in lo-fi conditions that emphasize room tone and tape saturation. Her albums, including Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill and Ruins, exist at the quieter extreme of guitar-based music, demanding close attention from the listener. The former wraps simple guitar figures in dense fog of reverb and delay until the source instrument becomes nearly unrecognizable, while the latter strips back to solo piano and voice recorded in a Portuguese residency. Harris' work resists the maximalism associated with shoegaze while sharing its interest in using effects to transform familiar sounds into something alien. Her influence extends across ambient, folk, and experimental music communities, and her live performances are typically delivered in near darkness to minimize visual distraction.
