Radiohead

Radiohead formed in Abingdon, England in 1985, evolving from guitar-driven alternative rock into one of the most adventurous acts in popular music. Jonny Greenwood's guitar work is defined by unconventional technique and gear choices — his use of the Fender Telecaster Plus, various Fender Starcasters, and an arsenal of effects pedals produces sounds that range from delicate arpeggios to violent, atonal attacks. The band's gear evolution mirrors their musical arc: The Bends relied on Marshall amplifiers and traditional pedalboards, while OK Computer introduced the Digitech Whammy and more experimental routing. Kid A and Amnesiac largely abandoned conventional guitar in favor of modular synthesis and digital processing. Ed O'Brien's role as textural guitarist, using extensive delay and reverb chains, added ambient depth that connected Radiohead's sound to shoegaze traditions even as they moved beyond rock.
