Led Zeppelin formed in London in 1968 from the ashes of the Yardbirds, with Jimmy Page assembling Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham into what became the most influential hard rock band in history. Page's production techniques — backward echo, ambient room miking, and layered acoustic-electric guitar textures — were as innovative as his playing. The band's range was extraordinary, from the crushing riffs of 'Whole Lotta Love' to the acoustic delicacy of 'Going to California' to the epic scope of 'Stairway to Heaven.' Bonham's drumming, recorded with minimal close-miking to capture room ambience, defined the sound of rock drums. Their refusal to release singles forced fans to engage with entire albums, helping establish the LP as rock's primary artistic unit. They disbanded in 1980 following Bonham's death, their legacy secure as the bridge between blues and modern hard rock.
