Supro Thunderbolt

The Supro Thunderbolt is the amplifier Jimmy Page used on Led Zeppelin's debut album, its small output stage breaking up at relatively low volumes to produce thick, saturated crunch. The single 6973 power tube and simple tone circuit create a compressed, harmonically rich overdrive that responds dynamically to picking intensity. Page chose the Thunderbolt for its ability to record at manageable studio volumes while delivering the heavy, grinding tone that defined songs like 'Good Times Bad Times' and 'Communication Breakdown.' The amp's lo-fi character and early breakup point made it ideal for close-miking techniques.
