Deafheaven formed in San Francisco in 2010, creating a polarizing fusion of black metal intensity with shoegaze atmosphere and post-rock dynamics. Vocalist George Clarke's shrieked delivery sits atop guitarist Kerry McCoy's compositions, which alternate between tremolo-picked black metal passages and clean, reverb-drenched sections indebted to Slowdive and Mogwai. Their 2013 album Sunbather, with its pink cover art, became an unlikely crossover success, drawing attention from indie rock publications and metal outlets alike. The album's blend of aggression and beauty opened doors for a wave of bands exploring similar territory, though few matched Deafheaven's compositional ambition. Later albums Ordinary Corrupt Human Love and Infinite Granite progressively softened their approach, the latter largely abandoning harsh vocals. The band's willingness to evolve has kept them at the center of debates about genre boundaries and authenticity in heavy music.
