Slowdive formed in Reading, England in 1989, releasing three albums before disbanding in 1995 amid shifting critical tastes toward Britpop. Guitarists Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell built interlocking guitar parts drenched in reverb and delay, creating a luminous sound that prioritized texture over aggression. Their 1993 album Souvlaki, initially dismissed by the British press, has since been reassessed as one of the genre's finest works, blending shoegaze density with ambient electronics courtesy of Brian Eno's contributions. After reuniting in 2014, the band released a self-titled album in 2017 and everything is alive in 2023, the latter incorporating modular synthesis while retaining their characteristic warmth. Their approach favors subtlety over the overwhelming volume associated with peers.
