Cocteau Twins

Cocteau Twins formed in Grangemouth, Scotland in 1979, eventually becoming the flagship act of 4AD Records and defining the ethereal wave sound. Elizabeth Fraser's vocals, often using invented words and glossolalia, functioned as another instrument within Robin Guthrie's heavily processed guitar landscapes. Guthrie's approach relied on chorus, delay, and reverb pedals chained together to create shimmering, non-linear textures that bore little resemblance to conventional guitar playing. Albums like Treasure and Heaven or Las Vegas demonstrated a band capable of creating immersive sonic worlds without relying on traditional song structures. Their influence extends well beyond dream pop into trip-hop, ambient music, and modern R&B, with artists from Massive Attack to the Weeknd citing them as foundational. The band dissolved in 1997 following the end of Fraser and Guthrie's personal relationship.
