Broadcast
Broadcast formed in Birmingham, England in 1995, built around Trish Keenan's distinctive vocals and the band's shared fascination with 1960s library music, radiophonics, and analogue electronics. Their debut The Noise Made by People combined Stereolab-influenced motorik rhythms with a ghostly atmosphere drawn from vintage synthesizers and tape manipulation. As the band evolved, they stripped back toward more experimental territory, with Tender Buttons reducing to a duo of Keenan and James Cargill and embracing a sparser, more unsettling aesthetic. Their collaboration with the Focus Group on Witch Cults of the Radio Age situated them within the hauntology movement, connecting postwar British electronic experimentation with contemporary psychedelia. Keenan's death in 2011 ended the band, leaving a catalog that remains influential among artists interested in the intersection of pop melody, vintage technology, and uncanny atmospheres. Their work sounds simultaneously futuristic and archival.
