Portishead

Portishead formed in Bristol, England in 1991, pioneering trip-hop alongside Massive Attack by fusing hip-hop sampling techniques with cinematic orchestration, blues guitar, and Beth Gibbons' haunting vocals. Guitarist Adrian Utley's playing draws from jazz, surf, and spy-movie soundtracks, using tremolo-heavy clean tones and spring reverb that evoke 1960s film scores. His approach to the instrument is textural rather than virtuosic — single notes and sparse chords processed through vintage effects sit within densely layered productions built from vinyl samples and analog synthesizers. Dummy and Portishead established the band's sound, while Third abandoned sampling almost entirely for live instrumentation and analog electronics, producing a harsher, more abrasive record. Utley's guitar work on Third incorporated heavy distortion and feedback, connecting the band to noise rock traditions.
