Bad Brains

Bad Brains were the fastest, most technically accomplished, and most boundary-shattering band in punk history. Emerging from the Washington D.C. hardcore scene, four Black musicians playing punk with a ferocity and precision that stunned everyone who witnessed them, they alternated between blistering hardcore — played at speeds that seemed physically impossible — and deep, spiritual reggae with equal authenticity and conviction. Dr. Know's guitar playing was extraordinary: blazing leads, jazz-inflected chords, and a tone that could shift from crushing distortion to warm, clean reggae in an instant. H.R.'s vocals ranged from a hardcore scream to a soulful reggae croon. Their self-titled cassette, later known as the Yellow Tape, and the ROIR album are foundational hardcore documents; Rock for Light, produced by Ric Ocasek, captured their intensity for a wider audience. Bad Brains proved that punk's energy and reggae's spirituality could coexist, and their influence on subsequent hardcore, punk, and alternative music is incalculable.
