The Clash

The Clash were punk's most ambitious and politically charged band, fusing raw three-chord fury with reggae, ska, rockabilly, hip-hop, and world music into a sound that expanded punk's vocabulary without diluting its anger. Joe Strummer's hectoring, impassioned vocals and Mick Jones's melodic guitar work — ranging from slashing power chords to reggae skank to rock and roll swagger — created a partnership as potent as any in rock. Their self-titled debut distilled punk's year-zero energy; Give 'Em Enough Rope added muscle; but London Calling, their 1979 double album, transcended genre entirely, ranking among the greatest albums ever made. Its range — from the apocalyptic title track through the rockabilly of Brand New Cadillac to the jazz of Jimmy Jazz — announced a band that refused to be constrained by punk's own orthodoxies. The triple album Sandinista! pushed further into dub and experimentation. The Clash proved that punk could be politically serious, musically adventurous, and culturally transformative simultaneously.
