The Jesus and Mary Chain

Brothers Jim and William Reid formed the Jesus and Mary Chain in East Kilbride, Scotland in 1983, fusing girl-group pop melodies with sheets of guitar feedback. Their 1985 debut Psychocandy is considered a foundational record for both noise pop and shoegaze, demonstrating that abrasive distortion and catchy songwriting were not mutually exclusive. Early live shows were deliberately confrontational, often lasting under twenty minutes and ending in equipment destruction. As their career progressed, albums like Darklands stripped back the noise to reveal the Spector-influenced pop underneath, while Automatic incorporated drum machines and a more polished production style. The band split acrimoniously in 1999 but reunited in 2007. Their approach of burying melody beneath distortion provided a direct blueprint for the shoegaze movement that followed.
