Tears for Fears formed in Bath, England in 1981, founded by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. Drawing on the primal therapy theories of Arthur Janov, they developed a sophisticated, emotionally intense brand of synth-pop that set them apart from contemporaries. Songs from the Big Chair (1985) became one of the best-selling albums of the decade, driven by the worldwide hits "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" and "Shout." The Seeds of Love (1989) pushed further into orchestral pop territory. Orzabal and Smith reunited after a decade apart and released The Tipping Point in 2022.
