Duran Duran formed in Birmingham, England in 1978, built around keyboardist Nick Rhodes and bassist John Taylor. The classic five-piece lineup — completed by vocalist Simon Le Bon, guitarist Andy Taylor, and drummer Roger Taylor — developed a sound that merged electronic synthesizer textures with a hard rock rhythm section and melodic pop songwriting. Their albums Rio (1982) and Seven and the Ragged Tiger (1983) made them one of the defining acts of the Second British Invasion, with MTV playing a central role in their global breakthrough. Often dismissed as a teen-idol act, the band's musicianship — particularly John Taylor's bass playing and Nick Rhodes's keyboard arrangements — was considerably more sophisticated than their image suggested. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.
