Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam formed in Seattle in 1990 from the remains of Mother Love Bone, whose singer Andrew Wood had died of a heroin overdose months earlier. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament recruited vocalist Eddie Vedder — an unknown San Diego surfer who recorded vocals over a demo tape and mailed it back to Seattle — along with guitarist Mike McCready and drummer Dave Krusen. They debuted as Mookie Blaylock at the Off Ramp Café on October 22, 1990. Ten (1991) became one of the best-selling rock albums of the decade, eventually certified 13x platinum. Its guitar architecture was built on contrast: McCready's lead work channeled Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan through a Marshall JCM800 and Fender Bassman, while Gossard's rhythm playing ran a Marshall and Fender simultaneously through a pan pedal, blending clean and dirty tones rather than committing to either. The Dunlop Rotovibe on "Alive," the Fender Bassman clean tone on "Black," the wah-drenched lead on "Alive" — Ten was a record built from specific gear choices made by players who knew exactly what they wanted. McCready's live rig evolved significantly after Ten. By the mid-2000s his primary drive channel was a Union Jack Amplification HG 50-watt head — later rebranded as Rola Amplification, built in the Seattle/Tacoma area — which remained his main amp for nearly a decade of Pearl Jam touring. He ran it alongside a 65 Amps head and eventually a Satellite head, all feeding Marshall 25-watt speaker cabinets. The combination gave his lead tone a vocal, harmonically complex quality that separated it from the tighter, more compressed sound of most high-gain rigs of the era. Gossard moved to a Matchless DC-30 as his primary clean platform through the mid-1990s, its EL84-driven chime adding a different texture to his rhythm parts. His pedalboard included an Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer, a Klon Centaur Overdrive, and a Boss Hyperfuzz at various points. Stone's approach remained consistent across the band's catalog: low-powered amps driven hard, dynamics preserved, no noise gates. Pearl Jam has released twelve studio albums and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. They remain one of the longest-running bands from the Seattle scene, having outlasted the commercial moment that launched them by three decades.
