Mötley Crüe formed in Los Angeles in 1981, founded by bassist Nikki Sixx, drummer Tommy Lee, guitarist Mick Mars, and vocalist Vince Neil. One of the defining acts of the Sunset Strip hair metal scene, they combined shock rock theatrics with hard rock hooks and genuine debauchery. Shout at the Devil (1983), Theatre of Pain (1985), Girls Girls Girls (1987), and Dr. Feelgood (1989) made them one of the best-selling rock acts of the decade. Their collective drug and alcohol problems, near-death experiences, and legal troubles are documented in their 2001 biography The Dirt, which was adapted into a Netflix film in 2019. They announced their retirement in 2015 then returned to touring in 2018. Mick Mars departed in 2022 due to a chronic health condition.
