Matchless HC-30
The Matchless HC-30 is a hand-wired 30-watt tube amplifier that combines EL84 power tubes with a two-channel design offering both clean and overdrive voicings. Built in Los Angeles, the HC-30 delivers a chimey, harmonically rich clean tone indebted to classic British circuits while its overdrive channel produces a smooth, singing distortion that retains note definition at high gain settings. Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam adopted the HC-30 as his primary amplifier during the band's mid-period work, drawn to its dynamic response and ability to transition between clean rhythm parts and crunchy power chords within the same performance. The amp's point-to-point wiring and premium components contribute to a three-dimensional tonal quality that rewards players who control dynamics through picking technique rather than pedal switching. Its relatively low wattage ensures natural tube compression at stage-practical volumes.
