Marshall JCM900

The Marshall JCM900 is a dual-channel tube amplifier head produced from 1990 to 2000, offering higher gain than its JCM800 predecessor through a revised preamp circuit with additional gain stages and diode clipping. The clean channel retains the JCM800's punchy, articulate character, while the lead channel pushes into more saturated territory suited to the heavier rock and grunge styles emerging in the 1990s. Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters adopted the JCM900 as his main live amplifier, its high-gain voicing providing the thick, compressed distortion that drives the band's heavier material. The amp's effects loop and channel-switching capability made it practical for bands requiring clean-to-distortion transitions without pedalboard tap-dancing. While sometimes criticized by purists for its diode-assisted clipping, the JCM900's tone defined much of 1990s rock and alternative music. Its current used-market prices make it an affordable entry into the Marshall ecosystem.
