Wet Leg

Wet Leg formed on the Isle of Wight in 2019, with Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers building a sound from deadpan vocals, hooky guitar riffs, and a refusal to take anything too seriously — an approach that made their self-titled 2022 debut one of the most successful British rock albums of the decade. Chambers' guitar work centers on a Fender Jazzmaster — the offset body's bright, chimey tone sitting perfectly in the band's mix — played through a combination of a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and various overdrive pedals, including a Boss DS-1 for the crunchier moments on "Chaise Longue" and "Wet Dream." Teasdale plays rhythm guitar on a Fender Stratocaster, keeping her parts deliberately simple and rhythmic to anchor Chambers' more melodic lines. The album, produced by Dan Carey at his Speedy Wunderground studio in South London, was recorded largely live with minimal overdubs — Carey's production philosophy of capturing first takes and raw energy suited the band's aesthetic perfectly. The bass work (by Ellis Sherwood-Mayatt live, Josh Sherbourne on the album) used a Fender Precision Bass through a clean amp, providing a simple, propulsive foundation. Henry Holmes' drumming was tight and punchy, recorded through Carey's collection of vintage Neve preamps. The band's sound draws from the post-punk revival — the rhythmic precision of Franz Ferdinand, the lyrical detachment of Pavement — filtered through a Gen-Z sensibility. Live, Wet Leg's rig stays close to the studio setup: Jazzmasters and Stratocasters through clean-to-slightly-overdriven amps, with the energy coming from the performance rather than the gear.
