Tricky
Tricky emerged from the same Bristol scene as Massive Attack — he contributed vocals to Blue Lines and Protection — but his solo work pushed trip-hop into far darker, more claustrophobic territory. His debut Maxinquaye is a masterpiece of paranoid, suffocating production: beats that stumble and lurch, vocals (his own raspy murmur alongside Martina Topley-Bird's ethereal counterpoint) buried under layers of distortion and samples, and an atmosphere of menacing intimacy unlike anything else in popular music. Where Massive Attack polished and Portishead sophisticiated, Tricky smeared and obfuscated, creating a sound that felt dangerous and unpredictable. His subsequent albums — Pre-Millennium Tension, Angels with Dirty Faces — continued to explore the anxious intersection of hip-hop, dub, rock, and electronic music, never settling into formula. Tricky remains the most experimental and uncompromising voice to emerge from Bristol's golden era.
