Digitech Whammy
The Digitech Whammy is a pitch-shifting pedal controlled by an expression treadle, allowing real-time pitch bends of up to two octaves up or down. Its polyphonic tracking and harmony modes make it a versatile tool for creating dramatic pitch sweeps, octave layers, and dissonant intervals. Tom Morello popularized its use in alternative rock, but shoegaze and noise rock players have adopted it for generating unsettling, alien textures when paired with heavy distortion and reverb. The Whammy's detune mode adds a subtle chorus-like thickening useful for widening guitar tone in a mix. The current Whammy V offers true bypass, MIDI control, and improved tracking over earlier generations. Its unmistakable red enclosure and expression pedal form factor have remained largely unchanged since the original 1989 release.
