Mannequin Pussy

Mannequin Pussy formed in Philadelphia in 2010, built around Marisa Dabice's ability to shift between delicate vulnerability and ferocious screaming within the same song. The band's dynamic range is their defining characteristic — tracks can open with fingerpicked guitar and whispered vocals before detonating into blast-beat punk fury. Guitarist Maxine Steen, bassist Colins Regisford, and drummer Kaleen Reading form a rhythm section capable of navigating these extremes with precision. Their 2019 album Patience crystallized this approach, earning critical acclaim for its refusal to choose between punk aggression and pop accessibility. The follow-up I Got Heaven pushed the intensity further while maintaining melodic sophistication. Dabice's guitar work is utilitarian and effective, prioritizing the emotional arc of each song over technical display. The band's live shows are visceral and cathartic, with Dabice frequently performing in the crowd, erasing the boundary between performer and audience. Mannequin Pussy's insistence on containing both tenderness and violence within the same body of work has made them one of punk's most compelling contemporary acts.
