Doom Club

Doom Club formed in Brooklyn, New York in 2021, emerging from the post-pandemic wave of bands that channeled anxiety and absurdity into sharp, angular post-punk. Their sound is built on the tension between melodic vocal hooks and dissonant, deliberately uncomfortable guitar work — a balance that drew immediate comparisons to Fontaines D.C. and the Pixies' loud-quiet-loud dynamics. The guitar setup is centered on a Fender Jazzmaster — the offset guitar's bright, chimey tone through a clean-to-slightly-overdriven amplifier providing the jangly foundation that shifts into noise when pushed through a Boss DS-1 distortion pedal. The DS-1's harsh, clipping distortion creates an abrupt sonic contrast with the Jazzmaster's clean tone — the transition between the two states functioning as a compositional device rather than just a volume change. The bass work uses a Fender Precision Bass through an Orange head, providing a thick, midrange-heavy low end that anchors the rhythmic shifts between tight post-punk grooves and looser, more chaotic sections. The drumming draws from the wire-tight precision of post-punk rather than the looser feel of indie rock, with tight hi-hat patterns and sudden dynamic drops. Their recorded output, produced with deliberate lo-fi energy at various Brooklyn studios, captures the live room sound: guitars and bass bleeding into drum microphones, vocal takes with room ambiance, and minimal post-production processing. Doom Club represents the current generation of guitar bands that treat limitations and cheap gear as aesthetic choices rather than compromises.
