Chapterhouse formed in Reading, England in 1987, blending shoegaze guitar textures with the dance rhythms emerging from the Madchester scene. Their 1991 debut Whirlpool layered distorted guitars over propulsive beats, positioning them at the intersection of shoegaze and indie dance. The album's single Pearl charted in the UK, giving the band broader visibility than many of their peers. Their follow-up Blood Music pushed further into dance territory with house-influenced production, a move that alienated some early fans while anticipating the electronic direction many guitar bands would later pursue. Bassist Stephen Patman and guitarist Andrew Sheratt created a dense harmonic foundation over which melodies floated with an ease that distinguished them from heavier shoegaze acts. The band disbanded in 1994 as the genre fell from critical favor, though Whirlpool has maintained its reputation as a key record of the era.
