Yo La Tengo formed in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1984 around guitarist Ira Kaplan and drummer Georgia Hubley, who are also married. Bassist James McNew joined in 1992 completing the lineup that has remained stable for over thirty years. Their catalog ranges from howling feedback-driven noise rock to gentle acoustic folk and lounge-inflected pop, often within the same album. Kaplan plays a 1960s Fender Stratocaster — his first electric guitar — through a Fender Vibrolux Reverb, and has described his soloing approach as drawing equally from downtown NYC minimalists and Bowery punk. I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One is their most celebrated record.
