Slightly Stoopid

Slightly Stoopid formed in Ocean Beach, San Diego in 1995 when Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald — both still in high school — handed a demo tape to Bradley Nowell of Sublime, who signed them to his Skunk Records label on the spot. That lineage defined the band's sound: a fluid fusion of reggae, punk, blues, hip-hop, and acoustic folk that resists genre classification. Doughty plays a Fender Stratocaster — typically a late-1990s American Standard model — through a clean amp setup that allows his tone to shift between reggae's rhythmic chop, blues leads, and punk crunch without relying on heavy distortion. The Stratocaster's middle pickup position provides the quacky, scooped tone essential to their reggae-influenced material. McDonald anchors the rhythm on a Fender Precision Bass through a Gallien-Krueger 800RB head, his fingerstyle technique drawing equally from reggae's melodic bass tradition and punk's driving eighth notes. Their early albums on Skunk Records were recorded raw and fast, capturing the live energy of their Ocean Beach shows. By Closer to the Sun (2005) and the live album Chronchitis (2007), the band had added horns, keyboards, and a DJ to their touring lineup, expanding the sonic palette without abandoning the guitar-bass-drums core. The acoustic side of Slightly Stoopid — prominently featured on songs like "Collie Man" — uses steel-string acoustics, often Martin or Taylor dreadnoughts, keeping the reggae-folk hybrid sound that makes them perennial headliners on the Southern California festival circuit.
