Sleep

Sleep formed in San Jose, California in 1990 and created one of the heaviest catalogs in rock history. Matt Pike's downtuned Gibson Les Paul through Orange amplifiers defined a sound of crushing, riff-based heaviness that drew equally from Black Sabbath and the Palm Desert scene. Dopesmoker — a single 63-minute track rejected by their label and eventually released independently — is one of the most extreme and revered records in heavy music. Pike went on to form High on Fire after Sleep's dissolution.
