Sunn Model T

The Sunn Model T is a high-powered tube amplifier head originally produced in the late 1960s and 1970s, delivering massive clean headroom and earth-shaking low end through KT88 power tubes. Designed primarily for bass, the Model T was adopted by heavy rock and doom metal guitarists for its ability to produce thunderous, room-filling tone at extreme volumes. Soundgarden used Sunn Model T amplifiers during their early recordings, exploiting the amp's enormous low-frequency response to create the subsonic heaviness that distinguished their sound from lighter alternative rock contemporaries. The Model T's simple circuit and high wattage produce a clean tone that remains articulate at punishing volumes, with natural tube compression adding warmth and sustain when pushed. Vintage units are highly collectible, with prices reflecting their cult status in doom, sludge, and heavy rock circles. Sunn was acquired by Fender in the 1980s, and the brand has been periodically revived for reissue runs.
