New Order
New Order formed in Manchester in 1980 from the ashes of Joy Division, following the suicide of vocalist Ian Curtis. The surviving members — Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, and Stephen Morris — recruited keyboardist Gillian Gilbert and reinvented themselves, merging post-punk guitar textures with emerging electronic dance music. Blue Monday (1983) became the best-selling 12-inch single in history. Their 1983 album Power, Corruption and Lies and 1987 compilation Substance are landmark records that bridged the gap between indie rock and electronic dance music, influencing an enormous range of artists across both worlds.
