LCD Soundsystem

LCD Soundsystem was always James Murphy's project — a former sound engineer and DFA Records co-founder who built one of the most critically acclaimed bands of the 2000s from a collection of analog synthesizers, drum machines, and an obsessive knowledge of post-punk, disco, and Krautwerk's motorik rhythms. On the self-titled debut (2005), recorded at DFA Studios in New York, Murphy constructed tracks from a Roland Juno-60 polysynth, a Roland RE-201 Space Echo tape delay, and a Dave Smith Prophet 08, layering live drums with programmed patterns from vintage drum machines. "Losing My Edge" and "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House" were built around the Juno-60's warm analog pads and the RE-201's degraded tape repeats — a sound that deliberately evoked late-1970s Berlin electronics without replicating them. Sound of Silver (2007), produced by the DFA at the Plant in Sausalito, expanded the palette: Murphy added a Minimoog for bass sequences, an ARP 2600 for textured noise sweeps, and live piano (a Yamaha grand) on the devastating "All My Friends," whose seven-minute build was driven by a single repeated piano figure. Pat Mahoney's live drumming — tight, disco-influenced, and relentlessly on the beat — gave the electronic textures a human urgency that purely programmed music couldn't achieve. Nancy Whang's keyboards and backing vocals added a Kraftwerk-meets-B-52s energy to the live show. This Is Happening (2010) refined the formula further, with Murphy's production becoming more precise: multiple Juno-60 patches layered with the Prophet 08's thicker analog tones on "Dance Yrself Clean" — a track that begins with compressed lo-fi drums before exploding into a massive synth-and-cowbell arrangement at the three-minute mark. Live, LCD Soundsystem performed as a full band with multiple synthesizer stations, a live drummer, and Murphy switching between vocals, guitar, and percussion.
