Hot Mulligan formed in Lansing, Michigan in 2013, developing a sound that pushed pop punk toward math rock complexity and Midwest emo emotional depth without sacrificing the melodic directness that makes the genre work. Vocalist Tades Sanville's self-deprecating, hyperspecific lyrical style became a signature — simultaneously funny and devastating in the tradition of the best emo songwriting. You'll Be Fine (2020) broke the band to a wider audience. Why Would I Watch (2022) cemented them as one of the most genuinely original bands in the scene. Hot Mulligan's influence on the younger generation of pop punk bands is already visible in acts that have emerged in their wake.
