Dick Dale invented surf rock and in doing so pushed Leo Fender to develop the Showman amplifier — one of the most powerful production guitar amps ever built. Dale demanded more volume and headroom than any existing amplifier could provide, and his collaboration with Fender produced an amp capable of handling his aggressive picking attack on a Stratocaster with a custom heavy-gauge string set. His left-handed playing on a right-handed guitar without restringing — like Albert King — produced a unique physical relationship with the instrument. Pulp Fiction's use of Misirlou in 1994 introduced his sound to a new generation.
