The Pedalboard Arms Race: When Did Guitarists Start Needing 20 Pedals?

From a single fuzz box on the floor in 1962 to Kevin Shields running 60 pedals across four boards — tracing the cultural, technological, and psychological forces that turned pedalboards into a competitive sport.

Keith Richards did not own a pedalboard when he recorded “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.” He owned one pedal — a Maestro FZ-1 Fuzz-Tone, a crude battery-powered box he intended as a placeholder for a brass section that was never recorded. He plugged it in, liked what he heard, and left the track as-is. The pedal sold out of stock everywhere Gibson could put it. That is how this whole thing started.

Today, a mid-level touring guitarist thinks nothing of traveling with a board housing fifteen pedals, a dedicated power supply, a loop switcher, and a wireless receiver. The serious amateurs post full pedalboard photographs to Instagram with gear lists in the captions. Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine runs 60 pedals spread across multiple boards, requiring a custom loop switching system to manage the routing. Somewhere between Richards' single fuzz box and Shields' cathedral of effect units, something fundamental changed — not just in the tools available to guitarists, but in how guitarists relate to their tools.

This is the story of that change. It is a story about technology, genre, obsession, and the human tendency to conflate accumulation with mastery. It is also, if we are being honest, a story about how the pedalboard stopped being a means to an end and became an end in itself.


Year Zero: The Floor Was the Pedalboard

Before there were pedalboards, there was the floor. In the early 1960s, the concept of a standalone effects unit for guitar was essentially brand new. The Maestro FZ-1 Fuzz-Tone, introduced in 1962, is widely considered the first mass-produced guitar pedal. It achieved widespread popularity in 1965 after Keith Richards used it on “Satisfaction,” at which point Gibson sold out of their entire stock. In the wake of that single song, an entire industry lurched into existence. Garage rock bands wanted fuzz. Psychedelic acts wanted fuzz. Everyone wanted fuzz.

The Dallas-Arbiter Fuzz Face followed shortly after, becoming the pedal most closely associated with Jimi Hendrix. The Vox wah arrived in 1967 and immediately became another essential, its expressive filter effect finding a home in the hands of Hendrix and Clapton alike. Then came phasers, flangers, and early delay units. By the early 1970s, guitarists who wanted to use multiple effects had a genuinely new problem: what do you do with all these boxes?

The answer, for most players through most of the late 1960s, was the same thing Richards did — you threw them on the floor and kicked them on and off with your foot, trailing cables everywhere. This was chaotic, noisy, and unreliable. Signal degraded as it passed through multiple passive units. Ground loops introduced hum. At the volume levels of arena rock, these were not minor inconveniences. They were show-stopping problems.


Pete Cornish and the Invention of Order

The guitarist who forced the pedalboard into existence was David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. The man who answered the call was Pete Cornish, a British electronics engineer who has since been described as “the inventor of the guitar pedalboard.” Since the early 1970s, Cornish built custom switching systems and effects for some of the biggest names in guitar history, including Gilmour, Brian May, Eric Clapton, Andy Summers, and Paul McCartney. At a time when most players were still throwing loose stompboxes on the floor, Cornish was designing fully integrated boards with buffered signal paths, silent switching, and construction that could survive world tours.

The first major Cornish board for Gilmour was designed in March 1976 for the Animals tour. The board contained a Fuzz Face, a custom Pete Cornish fuzz, an MXR Phase 100, a Univox Uni-Vibe, a Cry Baby wah, and an MXR Dynacomp compressor, among others — roughly eight to ten units organized into a single coherent system with proper impedance management and a buffered output. For The Wall tour, Cornish built eleven boards just for that production. Pink Floyd had transformed the pedalboard from a practical necessity into a system architecture problem.

The standardization that made all of this possible was happening simultaneously in the broader market. Through the 1970s, guitar pedals began to arrive in more uniform sizes and layouts, with the 9-volt power standard becoming the norm. This meant guitarists could start chaining multiple pedals together predictably, which in turn created demand for dedicated surfaces to manage them. The pedalboard was no longer a custom solution for arena-level acts. It was becoming equipment.


The 1980s Rack Era: When Bigger Meant Professional

The 1980s complicated everything. Digital effects — particularly digital delays, reverbs, and pitch-shifters — became genuinely competitive with their analog counterparts in terms of capability, while offering programmability and precision that analog could never match. They also promised to bring increased tonal complexity to live shows and encouraged the lush, clean tones that defined the production aesthetic of the decade.

The format of choice for serious players was not the pedalboard but the rack. Multi-unit effects processors from companies like Eventide, Lexicon, and Roland disappeared into 19-inch rack cases, controlled by MIDI foot controllers. The rack rig was the status symbol of the period. If your effects lived in a rolling road case backstage and you stood onstage with only a controller at your feet, you were a professional. The pedalboard was for weekend warriors. The rack was for touring artists.

This era produced some genuinely extraordinary rigs — Eddie Van Halen's famous “brown sound” involved specific amp modifications more than effects, but the rack aesthetic permeated almost every major rock act of the period. The downside was complexity. MIDI programming, signal routing, and the sheer weight and expense of rack systems put serious multi-effect rigs out of reach for most players. And the sounds produced, for all their technical sophistication, often felt sterile and processed in a way that would ultimately provoke a fierce backlash.


Shoegaze Changed the Game on the Floor

While the rock mainstream was going vertical with racks, a subset of the alternative world was going horizontal with pedals — lots and lots of pedals. The shoegaze movement of the late 1980s and early 1990s built its entire aesthetic around the physical act of staring down at a floor covered in effect units, simultaneously manipulating multiple pedals with your feet while playing. The name of the genre is a description of the posture.

Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine became the patron saint of this approach. His guitar work on Loveless (1991) was so thoroughly processed and layered that it required simultaneous use of multiple effects to recreate live. The sound they became known for began to solidify in the late 1980s, and by the time of their landmark recordings, Shields was running multiple Fuzz Faces, whammy bars, and volume pedals simultaneously. His “glide guitar” technique — rocking the tremolo arm while manipulating a wah pedal and a volume pedal at the same time — is physically impossible with a single unit. It demands a floor full of tools.

Shields' current rig has become legendary for its sheer scale. He uses 60 pedals in his rig, most of them fuzz pedals, organized across multiple boards with a state-of-the-art loop switching system to manage routing and prevent signal degradation. His main pedalboard alone contains everything from multiple Big Muff variants to a Keeley-modded Ibanez AD-9 Delay, a Roger Mayer Voodoo Vibe, and a host of Devi Ever fuzz units. At last count, at least four separate boards have been photographed at once — with possibly more out of frame. This is not excess for its own sake. For the sounds Shields makes, every one of those pedals is a specific tool for a specific texture.


The Line 6 DL4 and the Democratization of Complexity

If shoegaze validated the idea of the large pedalboard aesthetically, it was a lime-green digital delay unit from 1999 that made it accessible to everyone. The Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler was introduced in 1999 and quickly became a fixture on professional pedalboards worldwide, offering 16 modeled delay types, a built-in loop station, and a level of sonic versatility that no single analog pedal could touch. It modeled everything from the Maestro EP-1 Echoplex and Roland Space Echo to the Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man — essentially fifteen delay pedals in a single box.

The DL4 was something of a trailblazer in 1999 because there was nothing else quite like it at the time. Artists like Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead and Omar Rodríguez-López of The Mars Volta helped cement its cult status, using it for everything from ambient textures to chaotic sonic experimentation. The guitarist Dave Knudson of Minus the Bear became known for running up to four DL4s on his pedalboard at once, using the looper functions to build interlocking live compositions in real time.

What the DL4 did, beyond its own sound, was demonstrate a new paradigm: large, multi-function pedals that lived permanently on the board rather than being swapped out. Before the DL4, guitarists often thought of pedals as interchangeable tools. After it, the pedalboard began to be understood as a fixed signal architecture — a designed system rather than a collection of boxes. Larger pedals like the DL4, Strymon's Timeline, and Eventide's TimeFactor became more popular, introducing huge jumps in tonal quality and customization, as well as higher power draws that required guitarists to get more creative with their rigs.


The Boutique Boom: When Pedals Became Collectibles

The other force that drove boards past the ten-pedal threshold was the boutique pedal explosion of the 2000s. While craft pedal makers existed before the turn of the millennium — soldering circuit boards in basement workshops, building one-of-one pieces for friends — the quarter-century since has seen an extraordinary proliferation of small-batch builders. Around the 2000s, boutique builders like ZVEX, Keeley Electronics, Wampler, and EarthQuaker Devices revived interest in analog tones, creative circuits, and high-quality builds. This movement was in large part a reaction to the digital dominance of the previous decade.

ZVEX's Fuzz Factory — a wildly interactive, near-chaotic fuzz with five knobs that interact in deeply nonlinear ways — became one of the totemic boutique pedals of the era, offering sounds that major manufacturers simply would not produce at scale. EarthQuaker Devices, founded by Jamie Stillman in Akron, Ohio after a broken DOD 250 preamp pedal sent him down a rabbit hole of circuit research, became known for pedals like the Afterneath reverb and Rainbow Machine pitch shifter — effects built around genuinely novel circuit architectures rather than variations on existing designs. Strymon entered the market with studio-grade digital effects in pedalboard-friendly enclosures, proving that premium digital processing could live happily alongside analog dirt boxes.

The crucial shift the boutique era produced was treating pedals not just as tools but as objects. Limited runs, hand-painted graphics, numbered units, artist collaborations — boutique pedals accrued the cultural status of collectibles. Guitarists who would never describe themselves as gear collectors began maintaining wishlists. Secondary market prices for discontinued boutique pedals climbed. A used Klon Centaur — a transparent overdrive that Paul Cochrane originally sold for a few hundred dollars — was changing hands for thousands. The pedal had become something you owned, not just something you used.


GAS, Instagram, and the Pedalboard as Performance

Gear Acquisition Syndrome — GAS — is the musicians' unrelenting urge to buy and own instruments and equipment as an anticipated catalyst of creative energy and bringer of happiness. For many musicians, it involves an unavoidable compulsion to spend money perhaps not entirely needed on gear that the belief it will make them a better player. GAS is not new. Guitarists have always been susceptible to it. What changed in the 2010s was that social media gave GAS a public stage.

Instagram and YouTube turned the pedalboard into a visual medium. The practice of photographing your board from above — neatly cabled, power supply hidden, every pedal face-up and perfectly aligned — developed its own aesthetic vocabulary and its own term: pedalboard porn. Rig Rundown videos on YouTube, where guitarists walk through their signal chains in meticulous detail, became a genre unto themselves, accumulating millions of views. The explosion of social media became one of the most significant factors in the rise of the boutique pedal scene, amplifying awareness of small-batch builders and creating communities where board composition was discussed with the same intensity previously reserved for tone debates.

The result is that building a pedalboard became a creative act in its own right, separate from playing guitar. You could spend an entire afternoon designing the signal chain — tuner to compressor to overdrive to fuzz to modulation to delay to reverb, or some variation and expansion of that architecture — without ever plugging a guitar in. Not only did guitar players start combining analog and digital effects on the same pedalboard, but multi-effects processors added even more options to experiment with. The board had become a composition medium.


The Counterargument: Jack White Has Two Pedals

Here is the counterargument, and it deserves to be taken seriously. Jack White built a career on radical simplicity. Early White Stripes live rigs ran through a Digitech Whammy and not much else. The band's rule — guitar, bass forbidden, drums and guitar only — forced a minimalism that produced some of the most visceral rock music of the 2000s. The limitation was the point. The constraint was the creative tool.

Similarly, Kurt Cobain's pedalboard for most of Nirvana's career was not elaborate. A Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion and an Electro-Harmonix Small Clone chorus were the core tools. The Seattle Sound was not built on complexity. It was built on compression, distortion, and volume. Eddie Vedder famously does not use effects at all. The argument that more pedals equals more creativity does not survive contact with the actual history of rock music.

And yet — this is where the counterargument gets complicated — Cobain's simplicity was a deliberate stylistic choice in a tradition of punk minimalism. Shields' complexity is equally deliberate in the shoegaze tradition where texture is the entire point. The number of pedals a guitarist needs is entirely genre-dependent, and prescribing the correct number is a category error. The problem is not people who need 20 pedals. It is people who buy 20 pedals hoping they will sound like they need 20 pedals.


The Real Question Nobody Asks

The pedalboard arms race accelerated because the industry made it easy, the internet made it social, and human psychology made it compulsive. Companies like Chase Bliss Audio and Strymon push the boundaries of hybrid analog/digital technology, creating pedals with MIDI, preset saving, expression inputs, and stereo capabilities — each of which solves a genuine problem for some players and creates a new desire in players who previously did not know they had that problem. The tools are genuinely extraordinary. The Strymon Timeline alone does more than entire rack systems from the 1980s.

But the real question — the one that almost never gets asked in gear threads and forum discussions — is not “what pedal should I add?” It is “what sound do I actually want that I cannot currently make?” Those are different questions with different answers. The first one leads to more pedals. The second one sometimes leads to fewer.

The Maestro FZ-1 that Keith Richards kicked on in 1965 was supposed to be a brass section. It was a workaround, a placeholder, a solution to a problem that did not exist yet. What it became was a sound nobody had heard before. That is still the highest possible achievement for any pedal — not the number of knobs it has, not the production run size, not the resale price. A sound nobody had heard before. Everything else is just the floor you stand on to get there.


The arms race has no finish line. There will always be another boutique builder, another limited run, another chase for the perfect overdrive that “responds like a real amp.” That is fine. The obsession has produced genuinely extraordinary tools, and some of those tools have enabled genuinely extraordinary music. Just know the difference between a pedalboard that serves your playing and a pedalboard that has replaced it.
