The conventional story about heavy metal guitar tone goes something like this: big amps, hot pickups, lots of distortion. It is a story that treats the pickup as a passive ingredient — a thing that sits in the guitar and converts string vibration into signal, and mostly stays out of the way. The EMG 81 (Reverb) demolished that story. James Hetfield's conversion to EMGs came slightly later. A student of his once brought a small Fender Mustang loaded with EMG pickups to a lesson, and the volume, clarity, and tone compared to Wylde's Les Paul Custom with stock PAF pickups was so dramatic that Wylde switched immediately. This ubiquity was self-reinforcing. Young metal players buying their first serious guitar encountered EMG 81s immediately. Why It Works: The Physics of High-Gain Articulation

The Legacy: EMG Evolves, Competition Arrives
EMG has never stood still.
