Brian May Built His Guitar From a Fireplace — And It Sounded Perfect
The Red Special is the most improbable instrument in rock history. A century-old mantelpiece, motorcycle valve springs, and a teenager with a penknife — and it became the sound of Queen.
Every guitar player knows the Fender Stratocaster story. Leo Fender, who could not actually play guitar, designed it on a drafting table in 1954 and produced it on an assembly line in Fullerton, California. The Gibson Les Paul story is similar — a collaboration between a corporation and a celebrity endorser, refined over decades by engineers with proper tooling and resources. These are the instruments that defined rock guitar. And then there is the Red Special: a guitar built by a sixteen-year-old and his father in a suburban London house, largely from rubbish. It went on to record every Queen album ever made.
The industry consensus is that professional instruments require professional manufacturing. Tight tolerances, seasoned tonewoods from established suppliers, pickups wound to precise specifications. Everything about the Red Special violates that consensus. The neck came from a fireplace. The inlays came from a button. The tremolo was built from a motorcycle and a knitting needle. And yet the guitar sounded so distinctive, so powerful, and so uniquely suited to its player that Brian May has used it — almost exclusively — for over six decades of recording and live performance. That is not a feel-good story about making do with what you have. It is a fundamental challenge to what we think we know about how great guitars get made.
The instrument has two nicknames. May calls it the Old Lady. Everyone else calls it the Fireplace. Both names tell you something true about it. One speaks to the intimacy of a relationship between a player and his instrument that spans an entire lifetime. The other speaks to where the thing literally came from.
The Problem Was Money. The Solution Was a Penknife.
In 1963, Brian May was sixteen years old and wanted an electric guitar. The problem was straightforward: Fenders, Gibsons, and Höfners were well beyond what the May family could afford. Rather than settling for a cheap beginner instrument or giving up entirely, Brian and his father Harold — a skilled electrical engineer who had already built the family's radio, television, and much of their furniture — decided to build one themselves. Their goal was not simply to make a playable copy of something that already existed. They wanted to design an instrument that could outperform anything commercially available at the time: more tunable, with a greater range of sounds, a better tremolo system, and the ability to feedback through the air in a controlled, musical way.
Work began in August 1963 and continued over the next year and a half, largely during evenings and weekends. It was a true father-and-son collaboration — both contributing ideas, engineering solutions, and countless hours of craftsmanship using exclusively hand tools. The neck was the first major challenge. They needed a substantial piece of hardwood — and they found one when a family friend was about to throw out an old fireplace mantel. The building it had come from was long gone. Harold happened to have the mantel sitting in his workshop. It was mahogany, approximately a hundred years old, and it was moth-eaten. Brian filled the wormholes with matchsticks as he hand-carved the neck profile with a penknife. The age of the wood, it turned out, was not a liability. Wood that has been drying for a century is extraordinarily stable — better, in many respects, than freshly cut timber from a lumber yard.
The body presented a different set of problems. The central section was formed from an old oak table. Around that core, two layers of blockboard — strips of softwood sandwiched between plywood skins — were shaped into the body contours and hollowed out to create acoustic chambers. The whole assembly was finished with a mahogany marquetry veneer and white plastic binding made from shelf edging trim. Then came multiple layers of Rustins Plastic Coating, which gave the guitar its distinctive reddish-brown color and its name. The fingerboard was oak, painted black to resemble ebony. The position inlays were hand-shaped from a single mother-of-pearl button.
The Hardware Nobody Sold
With the exception of the frets and the tuning pegs, every component of the Red Special was designed and manufactured by Brian and Harold May. The bridge is custom-made aluminium with roller saddles — designed to allow the strings to return to pitch accurately after tremolo use. The tremolo system itself is one of the most ingenious pieces of engineering on the guitar: it uses motorcycle valve springs for tension, a bike saddle-bag holder as a structural component, and a plastic knitting needle tip as part of the arm assembly. It should not work. It works brilliantly. May has credited the tremolo design with being one of the primary reasons the guitar stays in tune better than most commercially made instruments of the era.
The truss rod was bent into shape on the May family's kitchen cooker — Harold heated one end of a steel rod and bent it into a hook. The nut width at 46mm is significantly wider than most production electrics, which typically run 41–43mm, giving the neck a profile that players have described as unlike anything else they've held. The scale length is 24 inches — shorter than a Fender Stratocaster's 25.5 inches but longer than a Gibson Les Paul's 24.75 inches — which May felt would make string bending more manageable while still producing the tension he wanted for rhythm work.
The body design carries a deliberate structural secret. Although the Red Special looks like a solid-body guitar, it is actually semi-hollow. May had originally planned to cut f-holes into the top, but after the body was finished, he could not bring himself to cut into it — it looked too good as it was. The acoustic chambers remained concealed beneath the mahogany veneer. This semi-hollow construction was not accidental or incidental. May had watched Jeff Beck performing live and was captivated by the way Beck could manipulate harmonic feedback just by moving his guitar in front of the amplifier. May wanted an instrument that was alive in the same way — one that would sing and sustain and interact with the air around it. The hollow chambers were designed specifically to encourage that behavior. Previously, electric guitars had been designed to resist feedback; the Red Special was designed to embrace it.
The Pickup Problem, and How They Solved It Twice
The original pickups were homemade. Brian, applying his understanding of electromagnetic induction — he was, after all, on his way to becoming an astrophysicist — bought Eclipse button magnets from a shop in Kingston-upon-Thames, screwed them to a block, built a former around them, and wound 50-gauge copper wire around the assembly using a winder he and his father built themselves. The physics was correct. The execution was impressive. The problem was polarity: the magnets were arranged north-south-north-south rather than all pointing in the same direction, which meant that bending strings produced an unwanted rushing sound as the string crossed from one magnetic field to another. The pickups sounded good in every other respect. For bending, they were unusable.
The solution was a set of Burns Tri-Sonic single-coil pickups, which May purchased and then heavily modified. He covered the coils of two of the three pickups with Araldite epoxy to reduce microphonics — the tendency of an unshielded pickup to act as a microphone and introduce noise. The middle pickup remained uncoated. In the early 1980s, DiMarzio examined the guitar when designing pickups for the first Guild replica; at that point, the middle pickup's magnet was turned over to change its polarity and the wires on the solder posts were swapped to mimic a reverse-wound coil, making the bridge-and-middle combination humbucking. The Tri-Sonics are wider than standard Stratocaster pickups and produce richer harmonics — a characteristic that defines the Red Special's voice as much as anything else in the circuit.
The switching system is where the Red Special departs most radically from anything else built in the 1960s. Most guitars of the era offered a two or three-position pickup selector. The Red Special has six switches: three on/off switches and three phase-reversal switches, one pair for each pickup. The pickups are wired in series rather than parallel, which produces a significantly higher output and a thicker, more compressed sound. The combination of series wiring, individual on/off control, and in-phase or out-of-phase options for each pickup yields an enormous range of tonal possibilities — from single-coil clarity to something approaching the gain density of a humbucker. Brian and Harold could not decide on just one or two configurations, so they built a switching matrix that gave total flexibility. This was not standard thinking for guitar electronics in 1963. It still is not standard today.
The Sound That Defined Queen
The Red Special went into Queen's debut recording sessions in 1973 as an unknown quantity. Brian May had been told by more experienced guitarists that a homemade instrument would never cut it professionally — that he needed a commercial guitar if he was going to compete. He ignored them. When he heard the guitar played back through the studio monitors, the doubt evaporated. The semi-hollow body responded to the Vox AC30's output with a singing quality that solid-body guitars could not replicate. The controlled feedback that he and Harold had designed into the instrument was not a liability; it was the defining characteristic of his sound.
That sound — the signature Brian May tone — is the product of several interdependent elements, none of which works without the others. The Red Special into the Normal channel of a mid-1960s Vox AC30 with a Dallas-Arbiter Rangemaster treble booster between them. May took that approach directly from Rory Gallagher, having stayed late after a Gallagher show at the Marquee in London and asked him how he got his sound. Gallagher pointed to the AC30 and the little box in front of it. The next day, May bought two secondhand AC30s for thirty pounds each. The treble booster pushes the front end of the AC30 into harmonic saturation, producing that characteristic singing, sustained lead tone that saturates Queen's recorded catalog.
Then there is the pick. May does not use plastic. He uses a British sixpence coin, preferably pre-1950 vintage for its high nickel content and consequent softness. He arrived at this through systematic experiment — trying progressively stiffer plastic picks until they were too stiff, then picking up a coin and realizing he had arrived. The coin's serrated edge, angled against the string, produces what May calls “graunch” — a percussive, articulating consonant attack that no plastic pick can replicate. He has a particular fondness for 1947 sixpences, the year he was born, for their softness. A custom “Maydusa” sixpence tribute coin is glued to the headstock of the Red Special itself.
Why the Wood Actually Matters
The received wisdom in lutherie is that tone wood matters, and that the best tone woods are those with known, consistent properties — mahogany, rosewood, ebony, maple, all from reputable suppliers with documented grain and moisture content. The Red Special's neck wood is a century-old moth-eaten mahogany fireplace mantel, hand-carved with a penknife, with the wormholes plugged with matchsticks and Rustins Plastic Coating. By any conventional standard, it should not produce a great-sounding guitar.
But the conventional standard misses something. Wood that has been drying and stabilizing for a hundred years is extraordinarily consistent — the cellular structure has long since finished moving, the moisture content has equilibrated to its environment, and the material has reached a kind of acoustic maturity that freshly cut timber takes decades to approach. The old-growth mahogany in that fireplace mantel, whatever its cosmetic flaws, was acoustically exceptional material. The wormholes May filled with matchsticks did not compromise the structural integrity of the neck. The neck has remained stable throughout sixty-plus years of touring across climates that destroy lesser instruments. This is either extraordinary luck or a vindication of the physics of aged wood — probably some of both.
The semi-hollow body construction adds another layer to the tonal equation. The blockboard body with its hollow acoustic chambers resonates differently from a solid mahogany or alder body. It gives the Red Special a liveliness — a sensitivity to the acoustic environment around it — that is audible on every Queen recording. Play the opening chord of “Bohemian Rhapsody.” That sustain, that bloom, that sense of the guitar breathing in sympathy with the air around it: that is what May and Harold designed when they scooped out the body of an old oak table in a suburban London workshop in 1963.
The Counterargument: Was It Really the Guitar?
Here is the skeptic's position, and it deserves honest engagement: Brian May would have sounded like Brian May on any guitar. His technical approach — the precise vibrato, the orchestrated multi-tracked harmonies, the use of the Vox AC30 and Rangemaster treble booster, the coin pick — these are the primary contributors to his sound. A reasonably good guitar through that signal chain would produce something recognizably May-like. The Red Special is, on this reading, a great player's instrument that gets disproportionate credit because of its origin story.
This position is not entirely wrong. May's musicianship is the foundation of everything Queen recorded. But it also underestimates what the Red Special actually contributes. The six-switch electronics — the ability to run any combination of the three Tri-Sonic pickups in or out of phase with each other — gave May tonal options that simply did not exist on commercial guitars of the era. The out-of-phase combinations in particular produce a hollow, nasal quality that appears throughout the Queen catalog as a tonal color. The semi-hollow body's feedback response is not replicable on a Stratocaster or Les Paul at the same gain settings. And the Tri-Sonic pickups, with their wide format and distinctive harmonic character, are genuinely different from any pickup fitted to a mass-market guitar. These are not small distinctions. They are fundamental to what Queen sounds like.
May himself has been direct about this. He designed the guitar to have a capability beyond what commercial instruments offered. The intention was not to build something that worked despite its materials — it was to build something that worked because of deliberate engineering choices that commercial manufacturers had not made. The fireplace neck was not a romantic accident. It was the best available material for a teenager without a budget.
The Legacy: One Guitar, Every Show
The Red Special has been used almost exclusively on every Queen album and every Queen live performance for more than fifty years. The one notable exception is “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” which was recorded on a Telecaster. Everything else — every solo, every rhythm part, every orchestrated guitar harmony — is the Red Special. This is a degree of loyalty to a single instrument that is essentially without parallel in professional rock music at this level. Eric Clapton has gone through phases. Jimmy Page has multiple guitars. Eddie Van Halen built new instruments throughout his career. May plays the Fireplace.
The guitar is not insured because May cannot put a value on it. Several close replicas have been built over the years — by luthier Greg Fryer and others — that May has used as backups and touring instruments when the original needs rest. None of them, he has said, plays or sounds quite like the original. This is consistent with everything known about how aged tonewoods behave, how a guitar's neck settles into a player's hands over decades, how the accumulated history of a particular instrument affects its resonance. The Red Special is not just a guitar. It is sixty years of Brian May's life resonating in a piece of Victorian mahogany.
Commercial replicas now exist at several price points. But you will get the switching system, and the Tri-Sonics, and the semi-hollow body. And that combination of deliberate engineering choices — made by a teenager and his father in a London workshop in 1963 with hand tools and scavenged materials — is what makes this guitar unlike anything that Fender or Gibson or anyone else was building at the time. The Fireplace nickname is a joke and a tribute. It is also just the truth.
The lesson of the Red Special is not that you should build your guitar from whatever is lying around your house. It is that the conventional path to great gear — buying the right brand, from the right company, with the right specs — is not the only path. Brian and Harold May looked at what they had and asked what they could make it do. The answer turned out to be: fill stadiums for fifty years. The Fireplace is still burning.
