Vocoder

A vocoder is a synthesis device that analyzes the spectral characteristics of one sound (typically vocals) and applies them to another (typically a synthesizer or guitar), creating robotic, harmonized vocal effects. Joe Walsh incorporated vocoder effects into his solo work and Eagles recordings, using the technology to blend his guitar and vocal performances into otherworldly textures. The vocoder's ability to make instruments speak and vocals sing in harmony added an experimental dimension to Walsh's already eclectic approach. His use helped popularize the effect in rock music beyond its electronic and funk origins.
