The Synclavier was the most advanced digital music system of its era, combining FM synthesis, additive synthesis, and sampling into a single workstation that could cost as much as a house. Michael Jackson's Bad and Dangerous sessions relied heavily on the Synclavier's ability to create complex, layered sounds impossible to produce with conventional instruments. Its velocity-sensitive keyboard and real-time sequencer allowed producers like Quincy Jones and Teddy Riley to construct intricate arrangements with pristine digital clarity, pushing pop production into territory that analog equipment could not reach.
