Sunn Beta Lead
The Sunn Beta Lead is a solid-state guitar amplifier introduced in 1979 by Sunn Musical Equipment, producing 100 watts through a solid-state circuit rather than tubes. Where most heavy rock players favor tube amplifiers for their natural compression and harmonic saturation, the Beta Lead offers an aggressive, unforgiving character with a cutting high-end presence and tight, controlled low end that suits players who attack the strings hard. Buzz Osborne of the Melvins has used the same original 1979 Sunn Beta Lead amplifiers throughout the band's entire career, making it one of the most recognizable amps in underground heavy music. Its solid-state clarity amplifies Osborne's dropped-D tuning and heavy string attack without the compression that tubes would introduce.
