Linn LM-1 Drum Computer
The Linn LM-1 was the first drum machine to use digitally recorded acoustic drum samples, revolutionizing pop and R&B production when introduced in 1980. Only 525 were ever made, but its crisp, realistic drum sounds appeared on more hit records than any other rhythm device of its era. Prince used the LM-1 on 1999, Purple Rain, and virtually every recording through the mid-1980s, programming its patterns himself and exploiting its shuffle and swing capabilities. Michael Jackson's Thriller sessions employed the LM-1 for its tight, punchy kick and snare sounds.
