Harmony H-802

The Harmony H-802 is a budget solidbody electric guitar produced by the Harmony Company of Chicago, originally sold through department stores and mail-order catalogs in the 1960s and 1970s. Its simple single-pickup design and inexpensive construction give it a raw, nasal tone with low output that breaks up easily when pushed through tube amplifiers. Dave Dederer of the Presidents of the United States of America bought his H-802 for forty dollars and made it the primary guitar on the band's self-titled debut, which went triple platinum. The guitar's cheap construction and unpredictable intonation contributed to the loose, lo-fi character that defined the album's sound. Harmony guitars were never intended as professional instruments, but their affordability and unique tonal quirks made them appealing to alternative rock musicians who valued character over precision. The H-802's association with POTUSA's massive debut has elevated an otherwise forgotten budget guitar into a piece of 1990s rock history.
