Fender Super Twin

The Fender Super Twin is a 180-watt solid-state and tube hybrid amplifier produced in the late 1970s, delivering enormous clean headroom and volume through two 12-inch speakers in an open-back cabinet. Its high wattage was designed for players who needed pristine clean tone at extreme stage volumes. Art Alexakis of Everclear famously used a Fender Super Twin with a blown tube to record the band's debut World of Noise, the malfunctioning amplifier producing a raucous, unpredictable distortion character with sparks shooting from the chassis and ice packs required to keep it cool during sessions. This happy accident gave World of Noise its distinctively raw, aggressive guitar tone — a sound born from equipment failure rather than careful engineering. The Super Twin's normal operation delivers powerful, uncolored clean tones, but its place in grunge history is defined by Alexakis' deliberate abuse of a broken specimen.
