Boss RE-20 Space Echo

The Boss RE-20 Space Echo is a digital recreation of the Roland RE-201 tape echo in a twin-pedal format, modeling the original's tape delay characteristics including wow, flutter, and head-selection patterns. Its eleven mode settings replicate the RE-201's combinations of playback heads and reverb, producing warm, degrading repeats that thicken and blur the guitar signal in musically useful ways. The twist knob simulates tape speed changes, enabling pitch-bent delay tails and runaway oscillation effects. Kevin Parker of Tame Impala uses the RE-20 as a core part of his psychedelic guitar sound, pairing its warm repeats with phaser and fuzz for dense, swirling textures. The pedal delivers much of the character of vintage tape echo without the maintenance burden of an actual tape mechanism, making it practical for touring musicians who want analog-style delay behavior in a rugged, roadworthy format.
