Boss BF-2 Flanger

The Boss BF-2 Flanger is an analog flanging pedal produced from 1980 to 2001, creating a sweeping, jet-like modulation effect by mixing the original signal with a slightly delayed, modulated copy. Its four-knob layout controls manual offset, depth, rate, and resonance, allowing everything from subtle metallic sheen to aggressive, swooping sweeps. Robert Smith of The Cure used the BF-2 as a core tone-shaping tool, engaging it for the liquid, underwater quality heard across Disintegration and other albums. When set to slow rates with moderate depth, the BF-2 produces a thickening effect similar to chorus but with more harmonic movement. Higher resonance settings create the pronounced, almost vocal sweep associated with classic flanging. Daniel Ash of Bauhaus also employed heavy flanging as part of his experimental approach to guitar tone. The pedal's affordability on the used market makes it an accessible entry point for post-punk guitar sounds.
