Binson Echorec
The Binson Echorec is an Italian-made magnetic drum delay unit that uses a rotating metal disc rather than tape to create echo effects. David Gilmour made the Echorec central to Pink Floyd's sound from the mid-1960s through the early 1970s, its warm, slightly degraded repeats creating the spacious, atmospheric quality that defined albums like Meddle and The Dark Side of the Moon. The Echorec's multiple playback heads allow rhythmic subdivision of delays, and its magnetic drum degrades differently than tape, producing a distinctive tonal coloration on each repeat.
